UPDATE: The paddleout in memory of Mark Metherell was held July 4th, 2008. The Laguna Beach Independent created a wonderful slideshow of the event on their homepage: http://www.lagunabeachindependent.com/news/2008/0711/Front_page/0001.html and Viki High added a very nice YouTube video below.
The family has asked that donations in honor of Mark be made to either:
1. Naval Special Warfare Foundation: http://www.nswfoundation.org—This is a fund for the widows and orphans of Navy Special Forces veterans killed while serving their country; or,
2. Growers First: http://www.growersfirst.org—This is an organization that helps rural poor farmers around the world to improve their lives through sustainable development programs.
Please write “In Memory of Mark Metherell” in the comment line if donating online or on the memo line if writing a check.
An impromptu and unofficial memorial service happened April 13 at Little Church by the Sea for Mark, the link is: http://www.lagunachurchbythesea.org/markmetherell/ for those who are interested.

I was talking with Jeff Tacklind at church about Mark and said if any youngster asked me what a true man looked like I would point to Mark. He was strong, bold, and courageous, but also loving, gracious and kind. He loved the Lord but didn’t like phony religion. He had the whole package. John Eldridge wrote a popular book called “Wild at Heart”, exhorting the men in the Body of Christ to become real men. That was one book Mark didn’t need to read. He was a real man. He is going to terribly missed.
Thanks for the slide show Dave. I can really connect with Mark’s life through those photos.
I’m glad you’re there to support Sarah and Cora through this difficult time.

when mark told me he was going to become a navy seal i was inspired and taken aback by the enormity of the challange. i can remember looking away and then looking back into his eyes to examine his conviction. looking at his picture i remember his resolve and confidence. steve smith
As I wrote on the blogsite, I just heard about Mark through Hugh Hewitt.
God bless him for his service and sacrifice to his country, and for his humanitarian selflessness toward the Iraqi people. He is the finest example of the character and heroism of the American soldier. His family are in my prayers.
Mark Metherell, rest in peace. How you lived your life, made a difference in the world. And we are all in awe, and humbled by your service and sacrifice.
Thanks for representing our country and who we are as a people.
